HYDERABAD:
Following public complaints and media coverage over stagnant tandoor prices despite falling wheat and flour costs, the district administration has issued a formal price reduction for chapati, naan, and other common tandoor items in Hyderabad.
According to a notification issued by Deputy Commissioner Zain-ul-Abideen Memon: 100g chapati will now cost Rs10 (previously Rs15), 120g tandoori naan is now priced at Rs15 instead of earlier rate of Rs20, and 180g tandoori naan has been reduced from Rs30 to Rs24.
All tandoor operators have been instructed to display the updated price list at their shops. The administration warned of strict legal action in case of non-compliance. Assistant commissioners and officers of the Bureau of Supply and Prices have been directed to conduct surprise checks to ensure enforcement.
Meanwhile, All Hyderabad Sheermal and Tandoor Association Chairman Fahd Mian Dehlvi announced a voluntary price cut of Rs5 each on milky-roti (240g) and kulcha (200g), now priced at Rs40 and Rs45 respectively.
However, the prices of Taftan and Sheermal-premium items made using ghee and milk-will remain unchanged at Rs90 due to their high production cost.
Fahd Mian added that previous price hikes were implemented after increases in the cost of flour, fine flour, ghee, and milk. But now that a 50kg flour bag has dropped from Rs5,800 to around Rs4,400, a price revision was both feasible and necessary.
The association has already implemented the new rates at its 80 registered tandoors in the city. However, he urged the district authorities to also enforce these rates at roadside eateries and restaurants not affiliated with the association.
