CBS News executive Bill Owens has officially resigned as executive producer of “60 Minutes,” citing a loss of editorial independence caused by increasing corporate interference.
Owens, who has served the network for 37 years and led the iconic news program since 2019, said in a note to staff that he could no longer make decisions “based on what was right for 60 Minutes, right for the audience.”
The resignation comes as CBS’ parent company, Paramount, faces legal pressure from President Donald Trump over a 2024 interview with then-Vice President Kamala Harris. Trump alleges CBS distorted Harris’ comments about Israel and Gaza by airing two edited versions across different programs. He is suing CBS and Paramount for $20 billion, claiming voter interference.
The legal case is unfolding amid Paramount’s pending sale to Skydance Media, a deal currently under federal review by the FCC, chaired by Trump appointee Brendan Carr. The review includes scrutiny of CBS’ editorial practices, with Carr requesting unedited footage of the Harris interview, which CBS ultimately released under pressure.
Sources say Owens stood firm against both corporate and political influence, refusing to issue an apology to Trump. CBS News President Wendy McMahon, in a tearful farewell, praised Owens’ leadership and integrity. For now, Owens’ longtime deputy Tanya Simon will take over leadership of “60 Minutes.”
Observers and media law experts argue Trump’s lawsuit lacks legal standing, with some calling it a direct threat to journalistic freedom. Owens, in his farewell, urged the show’s team to continue their mission of fearless reporting.
