Actor and activist George Clooney is throwing early support behind Maryland Gov. Wes Moore as a potential contender for the 2028 Democratic presidential nomination. In a recent CNN interview with Jake Tapper, Clooney called Moore a “proper leader” and suggested he’s one of the most promising figures emerging in the party following its loss in the 2024 election.
“He’s smart. He ran a hedge fund. He ran the Robin Hood Foundation. He’s a proper leader,” Clooney said, citing Moore’s diverse background and leadership credentials.
While also naming Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear and Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer as strong possibilities, Clooney said Moore stands out — especially after his leadership during Maryland’s response to the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse.
“Wes Moore is levitating above the rest,” Clooney added. “He’s served two tours in Afghanistan, speaks beautifully, and has handled tragedy with grace.”
Moore has been a vocal supporter of President Biden and played a visible role during Biden’s 2024 campaign. With the Democratic field still wide open, Clooney’s early praise highlights Moore as a serious name to watch heading into the next election cycle.
The Oscar-winning actor, who previously urged Biden to step aside in 2024 and endorsed Kamala Harris, emphasized urgency for Democrats to rally around a unifying figure: “We have to find somebody rather soon,” he said.
As early discussions around 2028 begin, Clooney’s comments could help raise Moore’s national profile well ahead of any formal campaign announcement.
