The annual intermediate examinations for 2025 in Karachi have been postponed due to multiple administrative and logistical issues, including a shortage of examination centres and the absence of a chairman at the Board of Intermediate Education.
Originally scheduled to begin on April 28, the pre-engineering, pre-medical, and general science examinations will now commence on May 6 or later. This delay is expected to push back the second phase of commerce and arts exams as well.
An official from the Sindh Department of Universities and Boards informed Express News that the ongoing matriculation exams in Karachi will continue until May 2. Several venues currently serving as matric examination centres are also designated for intermediate exams, making it impossible to transition them in time.
The official also highlighted complications caused by changes in the first-year results due to grace marks, as well as the lack of leadership at the educational boards in Karachi and Hyderabad. Both boards have been functioning without chairpersons for nearly a month, which has hindered the approval of examination centre lists and paper schedules.
Initially, the Sindh Education Department’s steering committee had announced that matric exams would begin on March 15 and intermediate exams on April 8.
However, objections from private school associations, citing Ramadan as an unsuitable period for exams, led the committee to reschedule and matric exams were moved to April 8 (post-Eid), and intermediate exams to April 28.
With the latest delay, students are now expected to sit their exams during peak summer temperatures. This may further delay the release of results, consequently impacting university admissions and the start of the next academic session.
