A British broadcast organization has claimed that Afghan Taliban sold around 0.5 million military weapons abandoned by the USA in Afghanistan either to terrorist organisations or smuggled them. However, the Taliban described the allegations as baseless, saying all weapons are safe.
According to the report, the weapons disappeared after Taliban took over Afghanistan in 2021. It quoted the UN as stating the weapons have reached groups linked to Al-Qaeda in Afghanistan. The Afghan Taliban themselves confessed that they were unable to provide details of at least half of the military weapons.
The UN report mentioned that the Taliban allowed their local commanders to keep 20 per cent of the US weapons, which promoted the sale of weapons in black market.
According to a local journalist in Qandahar, the US arsenal was being sold out in the open market till a year after Afghan Taliban takeover while the trade is still underway but secretly.
